As near as I've been able to discern, the dialogue in US politics has (d)evolved into:

Republican: "I AM PASSIONATE!"
Democrat: "Er, I am, but only if pressed."
Republican: "I KNOW, THAT'S WHY I'M BETTER THAN YOU!"
Democrat: "Um, OK, but can we talk about it?"
Republican: "NAZI!"

And the average American appears to be OK with that.
