Yeah, I had to look up panegyric. Cool word.

This is about me writing - any kind of writing; nonsense, sense, sensual, diary, fiction, non-fiction, diatribe, panegyric, short, long, beautiful, ugly.

Somewhere, somehow, there's a novel in me. I certainly have ideas as to what it may be about. I also have ideas for non-fiction - likely with a physics/philosophical bent (in which my stuff here on perception - when I get more of it written - would likely play a role).

I have a terrific coach. From when we first started working together (around Dec '08), at every opportunity, he's encouraged me to start journaling (in his words, "I might have mentioned it once or twice"). We've had lengthy discussions about the advantages of journaling... and it appears there's a dearth of disadvantages.

Sorry, no points for guessing what's coming next. Nostradamus is entirely superfluous at this juncture.

But, none of it has wanted to come out and play. I've explored possibilities as to why this may be, but such exploration is just a fancy way to waste time that could be better spent actually writing. This site helped for a little bit, but as the even only tenuously perceptive of you have likely noticed, I've had a bit of a dry spell since 12 April. The slightly more perceptive may recognize this article for exactly what it is as well. <sigh>

There may however, be a slight parting of the mental darkness. I was recently taking a break; visiting family and friends out at the coast. My big sister has a quite extensive library and has a few titles on writing. She suggested one in particular: "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. Writing of this ilk doesn't hold a lot of attraction for me, but Natalie has some terrific points, and actually managed to get me started with journaling. My scribblings are not exactly on what Natalie focuses (creative); in the last 2 weeks, I think I've managed to come up with maybe three ideas that rove beyond mundane scratchings about what happened between coffee and lunch.

It is still far too early to determine if journaling will prove to be a viable method or tool for me to get some of the myriad, swirling ideas out of my pea-brain. I guess time will tell... provided I can keep up writing at least a little bit each day.

As for this site, I had a rash of stuff to get out, then nothing for a bit. I gotta say that one of the three ideas that were exposed by my journaling may be worth an article here. I'll clean it up and see what happens. Stay tuned...

Anytime you want to discuss

Anytime you want to discuss the advantages of journaling, let me know. It's something I used to teach...as much about jogging the creative brain as about recording what you were thinking over breakfast. I too have a number of books on the topic.

Thanks, loricat. My coach is going to provide me with some suggested reading on journaling. Hmmm... I think that reading is as good as any excuse to not write. Whaddya think?
